Continuing Medical Education (CMEs)

Continuing Medical Education Program

Mission Statement

The Office of Continuing Medical Education (CME) at Women & Infants Hospital endorses the concept of lifelong learning by providing high quality professional educational activities designed to address the learning needs and knowledge gaps of its target audience

Purpose
The purpose of the CME program is to improve patient care and its outcomes, the patient experience, and to help meet the needs of women, infants, and others in our community. This is achieved through the provision of up-to-date information and scientific evidence, promoting wellness and active learning, and maintaining long term relationships in our target audience, thus improving performance.
Sample content of the WIH CME program includes but is not limited to:
  • GastrointestinaI Tumor Board
  • Medicine Fellows' Conference
  • OB/GYN grand rounds (Thursday morning 7:30 AM to 8:30 AM)
    • OBGYN Morbidity and Mortality conferences (peer protected)
    • OBGYN Multidisciplinary Tumor Boards to include
      • Breast tumor board
      • Cancer prevention case conference
      • GYN tumor board
    • OBGYN Specialty Care in Pregnancy

  • Perinatal Management Conference
  • Perinatal Pathology Conference
  • Risk Management
  • Schwartz Center Rounds
  • Women's Behavior Health Conference

Content Areas

The content of the overall CME program reflects the clinical areas of concentration of the hospital.  As a specialty hospital for women and newborns, these content areas focus on:
  • Primary and Preventive Care for Women, General Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Subspecialty areas: Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, Program in Women’s Oncology, Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery, Emergency Obstetrics and Gynecology, Minimally Invasive Surgery, Pediatrics and Neonatology, Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, Behavioral Health Pathology, Diagnostic Imaging, and Anesthesia (as they relate to women’s health)
  • Diversity, health equity and inclusion as relates to women’s health and newborns

Target Audience
The primary target audience of the CME program is comprised of full-time faculty and community-based, practicing physicians who provide health care services to women and newborns.   Although – as a tertiary referral center – our “community extends beyond Rhode Island to eastern Connecticut and southeastern Massachusetts, 90-95% of the participants are members of the medical staff and practice in the Providence metropolitan area.  On a rare occasion, the hospital will sponsor a regional or national activity (most of these activities are sponsored by Brown).

Types of Activities
The CME Program sponsors a range of educational activities, the format of which is determined by the methodology best suited to convey the information to the audience.  Most of the activities are live conferences or regularly recurring series (RSS), which include:

  • OB/GYN Grand Rounds
  • OB/GYN Morbidity and Mortality Conference
  • Perinatal Management Conference
  • Perinatal Pathology Conference
  • Multidisciplinary Tumor Boards in Breast Health and Gynecologic Oncology, Gastrointestinal Tumor Board
  • Specialty Care in Pregnancy Program (SCIPP)
  • Multidisciplinary Antenatal Diagnosis and Management Conference
  • Resident Research Day
  • Quality and DEI conferences
  • Risk Management education as appropriate
Other activities include panel discussions and workshops.  The CME program does participate in joint sponsorship with organizations or agencies involved with the health of women and children – e.g., Perinatal Neonatal Quality Collaborative of Rhode Island (PNQCRI).  Some of our tumor boards and OBGYN Grand rounds are virtually available to Kent Hospital and others in southeastern Massachusetts.

Expected Results
Using qualitative and quantitative (when available) measures, we will assess changes in competence, behavior, or patient outcomes.  Measures could include evaluation summaries, informal feedback, survey results, quality improvement data, patient safety data, or medical record audits.

With the increased emphasis on maintenance of certification, the CME program will attempt to facilitate physician compliance with requirements established by the American Board of Medical Specialties.  The CME Program will also encourage the Senior Vice President for Quality and Clinical Effectiveness to develop performance improvement CME activities.
