At Women & Infants Diabetes in Pregnancy Program, part of the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, we provide a wide variety of services for women who are pregnant and have diabetes, whether you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes or develop diabetes during your pregnancy (gestational diabetes).

Pregnancy has profound effects on the management of diabetes. If you choose to receive your prenatal care from the Department of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, you will have access to diabetes nurse-educators and nutritionists who specialize in caring for women with diabetes during pregnancy.

If you choose to receive your prenatal care from any other obstetrician, you can be referred to the Department of Maternal-Fetal Medicine for co-management of gestational or type 2 diabetes. You will meet with one of our MFM physicians regularly and have access to diabetes nurse-educators and nutritionists who specialize in caring for women with diabetes during pregnancy.

Research has shown that women whose blood sugar levels are elevated when they become pregnant have a higher risk of having a baby with birth defects. We will assist you in obtaining and maintaining good control of blood glucose levels before you become pregnant to decrease the risk of birth defects.
