Overview

The Minimally Invasive Gynecological (MIGS) program at Women & Infants Hospital offers complex surgical treatments of benign (non-cancerous) diseases. Our doctors have two years of additional fellowship training in advanced surgical techniques and are experts in benign gynecologic surgery.

We want to be your partner in making surgical decisions to improve your quality of life. Our experts will help guide you through the operative experience, from the initial consultation to recovery.

Advantages of Minimally Invasive Surgery

  • Quicker recovery

  • Less pain

  • Faster return to work, school, and normal activities

  • Less time in the hospital (usually same-day surgery!)

  • Smaller, more cosmetic incisions

  • Lower rates of complications

  • Ability to treat complex pathology through small incisions

MIGS surgeons treat a wide variety of benign gynecologic conditions, affecting women of all ages. Specifically, our doctors specialize in severe endometriosis, pelvic pain, and large uterine fibroids. Using an interdisciplinary team, we treat the most refractory and complex cases. Our priority is respecting women’s fertility choices in regards to ovarian and uterine conservation.

Surgical Options

Hysteroscopy

Using a very small camera, your surgeon can look inside the uterus and remove any tissue that may be causing you symptoms.

Vaginal Surgery

Allows the surgeon to treat your symptoms without making any incisions on you belly as the entire surgery is done through the vagina.

Laparoscopy

The surgeon makes a small incision on your belly and inserts a camera to look into the pelvis. If there is a disease to be removed or biopsied, they make additional small incisions and use slender long instruments through them to complete the surgery.

Robotic Surgery

Is similar to laparoscopy however the surgeon uses robotic arms through the small incisions in your belly. The robotic arms allow for more range of motion and can help your surgeon perform more complex procedures.

  1. What options, surgical and non-surgical, do I have to treat my symptoms?

  2. What happens if I don't choose surgery?

  3. Can my surgery be performed using minimally invasive techniques? If not, can you refer me to someone who can perform the surgery minimally invasively, such as a MIGS surgeon?

  4. What is my recovery going to be like and how quickly can I return to my life?
