Contraceptives, Miscarriage, Abortion & Pregnancy Options

Family Planning

If you need to discuss abortion care for pregnancy, please feel free to contact the Family Planning Clinic. Our staff can provide counseling, medical, and surgical treatment that includes:
  • Counseling about all pregnancy options, including abortion, adoption, and prenatal care. For people who are continuing pregnancies, we can discuss plans for parenting or adoption.
  • Medication abortion (the "abortion pill") for people up to ten weeks pregnant
  • Surgical abortion under local anesthesia in the office for people up to ten weeks pregnant
  • Surgical abortion under general anesthesia in the operating room for people up to 22 weeks pregnant
  • Post-abortion IUD or contraceptive implant
  • Permanent contraception (tubal ligation or sterilization)

In addition, we can help people with pregnancy failure in the first or second trimester (also called “missed abortion” or “intrauterine fetal demise”), with procedures in the operating room or office.

Creating a Birth Control Plan Together

Our staff includes obstetricians/gynecologists with expertise in family planning that can provide all methods of birth control.

For people with medical problems, we'll work with you to balance the need to treat your condition and your desire or medical need to plan for or avoid pregnancy.

To do so, a physician will assess your medical condition and consider any possible adverse or beneficial interactions with various types of birth control, complications of your disease, and possible drug interactions with your existing medical therapy.

Physicians at the Family Planning Clinic specialize in helping find an effective method of birth control for people who have complex or chronic medical conditions like:

  • Lupus
  • Thromboembolism
  • Congenital heart disease
  • Hypertension
  • Diabetes

The physician will then recommend appropriate family planning options, including:

  • Hormonal contraception
  • Barrier methods
  • Intrauterine device (IUD)
  • Contraceptive implant
  • Permanent sterilization
  • Emergency contraception
