About our Obstetric and Consultative Medicine Fellowship

The Women & Infants Obstetric and Consultative Medicine Fellowship is designed to provide the board-eligible or board-certified internist specialized training in the clinical care, teaching, and research of medical complications of pregnancy.

The fellowship draws on the many talents of the Division of Obstetric and Consultative Medicine’s uniquely qualified internists and The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University’s obstetric medicine and OBGYN programs to provide fellows with a stimulating, two-year experience in obstetric medicine.

Program Details

Length of Program

This is a two-year clinical Fellowship for general internists seeking advanced training in medical disorders of pregnancy focusing on specific areas such as endocrinology, cardiology, hematology, rheumatology, gastroenterology, and obesity.

Pre-requisites

Individuals applying for this fellowship must have graduated from an approved Internal Medicine residency program. We also welcome international applicants but they will need to have qualifications equivalent to the above as well as satisfy requirements for a work visa and the ECFMG requirements to enter a fellowship training.

Goals of the Program

  • Fellows work in both the inpatient and outpatient settings on the Medicine Consultation Service at Women & Infants Hospital to acquire knowledge in the physiology of normal pregnancy and the pathophysiology of diseases occurring in pregnancy and postpartum.
  • Learn to diagnose and treat medical complications of the pregnancy.
  • Learn to be an effective consultant to obstetricians, gynecologists, and other internists and sub-specialists.
  • Develop practical teaching skills through the supervision of senior medical residents and medical students.
  • Fellows will also complete research projects in the area of medical problems in pregnancy. With the assistance of a faculty advisor, it is expected that the work will be presented at a national or international meeting and published in a peer-reviewed journal.
 
Completion of the program: 
  • The Fellow will present written confirmation from the Director of Health Information Management that she/he has completed all medical record responsibilities.
  • The Director of Medical Education will ensure that the appropriate certificate is prepared for presentation at graduation.
