Three physicians from Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island/The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University have been inducted as fellows of the American Gynecological & Obstetrical Society.
The three new fellows are: Ruben J. Alvero, MD, director of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility; Paul A. DiSilvestro, MD, director of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology; and Vivian Sung, MD, MPH, FACOG, of the Division of Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery. All three are members of Care New England Medical Group.
Fellowship in AGOS is by invitation only and is reserved for individuals who are nationally and internationally recognized as leaders in their field. These three fellows join other Women & Infants’ physicians who are fellows of AGOS –Donald R. Coustan, MD; Cornelius O. “Skip” Granai, MD; Deborah L. Myers, MD; Maureen G. Phipps, MD, MD, MPH; Dwight J. Rouse, MD; and Katharine D. Wenstrom, MD. With these additions, Women & Infants/Alpert Medical School will be among the top departments in the country in the number of leaders in AGOS.

The American Gynecological & Obstetrical Society (AGOS) advances the health of women by providing dedicated leadership and promoting excellence in research, education, and medical practice. The AGOS is an organization comprised of individuals attaining national prominence in scholarship in the discipline of obstetrics, gynecology, and women's health.
Information about each of the fellowship candidates:
Dr. Ruben Alvero is a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the Warren Alpert Medical School. A graduate of Harvard University, Dr. Alvero earned his medical degree at the F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD. He completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., and a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Alvero is a fellow of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and of the American College of Surgeons. His clinical interests include assisted reproductive technologies, polycystic ovarian syndrome, endometriosis, and robotic surgery for uterine fibroids. His research interests include polycystic ovary syndrome, ovarian aging, and medical education.
Dr. Paul DiSilvestro, is a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the Warren Alpert Medical School. A graduate of the University of Vermont College of Medicine, Dr. DiSilvestro completed a residency at Women & Infants Hospital and a fellowship in gynecologic oncology at the University of Oklahoma. Dr. DiSilvestro serves as the director of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology and the Program in Women’s Oncology and the chair of the Board of Managers of Care New England Medical Group (CNEMG). He is principal investigator for the Women & Infants Hospital site of the National Cancer Institute’s cooperative research group, NRG Oncology, the NIH-sponsored cancer collaborative that includes the Gynecologic Oncology Group. Dr. DiSilvestro is the co-chair of the Gynecologic Cancer Committees at NRG Oncology and previously served on multiple other committees. In addition, he has been study chair or co-chair of multiple National Cancer Institute-sponsored Gynecologic Oncology Group trials. Dr. DiSilvestro is well-respected nationally for his clinical, teaching, and research expertise. He is a specialty board examiner as well as a subspecialty (gynecologic oncology) board examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Dr. Vivian Sung is professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the Warren Alpert Medical School. A graduate of Tufts University School of Medicine, she completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Magee-Women's Hospital and a dual fellowship in urogynecology and reconstructive pelvic surgery and epidemiology and clinical trials at Women & Infants Hospital. She is an active researcher and serves as the director of research for the Division of Urogynecology. Dr. Sung achieved certification in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery (FPMRS) by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG), where she serves as a FPMRS subspecialty board examiner. She is past president of the Society for Gynecologic Surgeons. Dr. Sung balances non-surgical, surgical, and minimally-invasive options for the management of pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence, and fecal incontinence. She has a particular interest in the critical evaluation and translation of new and existing clinical practices for pelvic floor disorders.
