Women & Infants Hospital of Rhode Island, a Care New England hospital, has been granted AABB (formerly known as the American Association of Blood Banks) accreditation for transfusion services provided by the hospital’s Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine.
Accreditation follows an intensive on-site assessment by specially trained AABB assessors and establishes that the level of technical and administrative performance within the facility meets or exceeds standards set by AABB. By successfully meeting those requirements, Women & Infants joins similar facilities throughout the U.S. and around the world that also have earned AABB accreditation.
Care New England Executive Chief of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine W. Dwayne Lawrence, MD, MSc (Path), was advised of this national recognition and congratulated for the excellence of the services being provided and the helpfulness of the staff.
“When you use Women & Infants for laboratory and transfusion services, you draw on the expertise and resources of one of the nation's leading specialty hospitals for women and newborns,” said Dr. Lawrence. “Our attending pathologists, laboratory managers, medical and histology technologists and technicians, and other staff members who deliver services to patients and other physicians have a specialized focus and depth of experience in diseases of women and children. Indeed, this AABB accreditation gives further assurance of the excellence of the services that we provide.”
Women & Infants Hospital offers a full complement of laboratory services, both routine and specialized testing related to women’s and infants’ health. The hospital has extensive testing capabilities in such areas as: AFP/endocrinology, gynecologic and breast surgical pathology, perinatal/pediatric pathology, cytogenetics, cytopathology, flow cytometry, and clinical laboratory services including chemistry, serology, transfusion medicine, molecular genetics/DNA, and serology.
